The Western Ghats isn't just about big mountains and tall trees. Sometimes, the most amazing sights are the smallest ones.
Welcome to the world of Herping—the art of spotting reptiles and amphibians.
At KaatiKaadu, located in the biodiversity hotspot of the Vanagoor Estate, you don’t need to commit to a long trek or a heavy expedition to see wildlife. You just need to look down.
Our estate is home to a thriving ecosystem of frogs, lizards, and unique insects. For nature lovers and photographers, this is a hidden universe waiting to be discovered right outside your door.
Meet Our "Frog Pals"
You don’t need to go deep into the forest to find life. A simple walk near our stream or even the pathway to the dining area reveals plenty.
We have documented several species right here on the estate, including the Granular Cricket Frog (Fejervarya granosa), a tiny marvel that is often heard before it is seen. The lush foliage around our cottages is the perfect habitat for:
- Tree Frogs: Often spotted clinging to leaves near the garden areas.
- Bush Frogs: Masters of camouflage, blending perfectly into shrubs.
- Reptiles: From the harmless Vine Snake to colorful garden lizards basking in the sun.

How to Spot Them (Casual Exploration)
Herping doesn't have to be a big event. It can be as simple as paying attention during your walk to breakfast or a post-dinner stroll.
The "Do-It-Yourself" Approach:
- Listen: If you hear a distinct croak or chirp, pause and look around.
- Scan: Check the wet leaves and mossy rocks near the water.
- Respect: The number one rule is "No Touch." Amphibians have sensitive skin. Observe, take a photo, but let them be.
👀 Keep Your Eyes Open
Staying with us? The stream area is thriving with life. Bring your camera (and a macro lens if you have one) and see what you can find just a few steps from your room.
Join the Experts
While casual spotting is fun, seeing the forest through the eyes of an expert is a game-changer.
We occasionally host dedicated Herping & Nature Workshops led by renowned naturalists. These are special events where experts help you identify species and understand the incredible biodiversity of Sakleshpur.
